I have had asthma since I was 8 years old. I have been on so many prescription medications for my asthma over the years but now I have some amazing home remedies in my toolkit to manage my asthma.
Reversing Asthma: Can It Be Done?
Until this winter I thought I had reversed my asthma. Over the past two years, I have avoided using those prescription medications due to changes in my diet including:
- eating more fermented foods like sauerkraut and kefir
- eating more healthy saturated fats like butter
- consuming gelatin-rich bone broth
- ditching processed foods with chemical additives, especially rancid vegetable oils like canola, soy and corn oils
- going mostly grain free – wheat especially triggers my asthma
These changes brought me a long way to totally reversing my asthma. I have been fortunate enough to be able to toss many prescription medications for my asthma. I still remember that day – I filled an entire trash bag full of pills, inhalers, steroids, nebulizer treatments…you name it, I had it.
A few years ago I ended up in the hospital with pneumonia, so I really do take asthma seriously. It has caused me to be more prone to spiral down from a simple cold to a serious illness.
So is my asthma gone? Not quite.
I still have symptoms when my body is inundated with my triggers. Are they as severe? Not usually. Now I only have one old rescue inhaler in my purse for true emergencies. However, I really despise using the rescue inhaler because it makes me jittery. I have yet to meet one asthmatic who likes their medications. The list of side effects of steroids (inhaled or taken orally) is lengthy.
Home Remedies for Asthma
Unfortunately this winter allergy season threw a lot of asthma my way. You see, in Central Texas we have a severe allergy event called Cedar Fever and this year has been one of the worst on record. If there was any thought in my mind that my asthma was reversed, I was proven sorely mistaken! Eating homemade real food is tremendous, but when I had asthma symptoms, there was nothing I could turn to except my rescue inhaler. This saddened me. I wondered if there was another way.
After months of experimentation on various remedies including these home remedies for seasonal allergies, I am happy to share that I now have a number of natural alternatives and that I have my asthma well controlled with essential oils. If you think essential oils are only for making your house or homemade beauty and cleaning products smell nice, then you are in for a surprise. I was personally shocked that they worked so incredibly well for my asthma. Floored.
So what can I share about essential oils for asthma? Here I have a recipe for an asthma roll-on that I believe works really well for mild to moderate asthma. I am also going to list some other oils which many recommend work and may assist you. Some of these have not worked well for me but that does not mean they will not work for you. Every root cause and presentation of asthma is different. I would highly recommend trying each of these oils in various ways for yourself or for your children to see what works best.
Home Remedies for Asthma: Homemade Asthma Roll-on Blend
This blend includes 4 powerful essential oils with properties that can reduce asthma symptoms. I have found these oils to be gentle, yet immediately effective when applied to my chest and throat just over my bronchial tubes. For use on children over the age of 6 due to the addition of Wintergreen (which is toxic if ingested for anyone, not just children) in the Raven blend. I personally have tried Raven on my 5 year old with no issues and I know many others who have as well.
- 20 drops Raven essential oil blend (where I buy this therapeutic essential oil blend)
- 10 drops Copaiba essential oil (where I buy this therapeutic essential oil)
- 5 drops Dorado Azul essential oil (where I buy this therapeutic essential oil)
- 5 drops Palo Santo essential oil (where I buy this therapeutic essential oil)
- 40 drops carrier oil (I used sweet almond oil but you can also use olive oil if you have a nut sensitivity)
Drop the essential oils and carrier oil into a roll-on bottle and rub between your hands to mix together. Apply as needed to the chest and neck. I carry this in my purse with me at all times.

Home Remedies for Asthma: Other recommended essential oils
R.C. essential oil blend
R.C. is highly recommended for asthma. For me personally, this oil was not as helpful but some sing its praises highly. It has three different types of eucalyptus and it is a strong expectorant. For this reason, I do not think it is wise to use this essential oil for a strong asthma attack with very constricted airways as it may cause unnecessary coughing. But this blend will work well for a wheezy, productive cough accompanying asthma and for daily asthma management. Because of the eucalyptus varieties in this blend, I would recommend being cautious in your use of this blend on children under the age of 6.(where I buy this therapeutic essential oil)
Breathe Again Roll On Blend
I have tried this blend and it works beautifully for a sudden onset attack. It also contains many different forms of Eucalyptus so be careful if these make you cough. Try and see how it works for you. Breathe Again is also a great oil blend to rub over the chest and neck before a run or other type of vigorous exercise if you have exercise induced asthma. It will open the airways up and keep them open. Because of the eucalyptus varieties in this blend, I would recommend being cautious in your use of this blend on children under the age of 6. Frankincense is a very versatile oil. I find this oil works on stress induced asthma. If you are feeling anxious and cannot breathe, this might be a good one to try. (where I buy this therapeutic essential oil)
This seems to be a wonder oil on me. Copaiba supports reducing inflammation. Asthma can be caused by inflammation due to reactions to various triggers. I have found if I have a very mild attack, I can start with just a drop of Copaiba and see if that helps. It usually does. (where I buy this therapeutic essential oil)
As I grow my knowledge in holistic home remedies, I am thrilled that I can get the help I need without using toxic products with laundry lists of side effects. But I share what I do with great humility. Please be cautious and listen to your body. Asthma is a serious chronic condition that requires close monitoring and management. If you do not have your asthma under control, it can cause serious illness and complications. Take care to be smart with these home remedies for asthma. If you cannot breathe, use the asthma medications you need or get to a doctor!
