How I Built a Business from Home

My Journey from MLM Skeptic to Royal Crown Diamond

From reluctant starter kit purchase to building a million-dollar business while prioritizing faith and family

In July 2013, I finally said yes to a persistent friend who had been reaching out for months about essential oils. I’ll be honest—I only agreed to help her out. As someone who grew up with asthma and never wanted fragrance in my home, the idea of diffusing oils seemed completely unappealing. The starter kit didn’t even include a diffuser back then, which was fine by me.

Looking back now, I’m incredibly grateful for my friend’s gentle persistence. If I hadn’t finally said yes, my life would be completely different today. That reluctant “yes” changed the trajectory of my health, my family’s wellbeing, and eventually led me to achieve Royal Crown Diamond rank—the highest level in Young Living—in just two years.

The Health Crisis That Changed Everything

What truly opened my eyes to natural solutions was a serious wake-up call the year before I got my starter kit. At just 31 years old, I ended up hospitalized with pneumonia. The doctors delivered devastating news: they recommended I quit my corporate job and pull my toddler out of daycare because my immune system was so compromised that I couldn’t handle everyday germs anymore.

That prognosis didn’t sit well with me. I knew there had to be a better way than accepting such limitations. That very day, I turned away from conventional medicine and began researching how to support my body naturally.

Personal Transformation Through Natural Living

By eliminating toxins from my home and incorporating essential oils into my daily life, everything changed. I haven’t needed to use an inhaler since 2013—truly remarkable for someone who had depended on asthma medication for years.

What started as a personal health journey quickly became something much bigger. I had been running my blog, Homemade Mommy, since 2009 when I started it to organize recipes for myself and my mother. Through trial and error, I had grown it to over 300,000 unique visitors per month. I had built a community of like-minded mothers who cared about what they fed their families, but I didn’t really know them personally.

When I joined Young Living, I wasn’t looking for a business. I had a negative impression of MLM companies—probably because I didn’t know anyone successful in network marketing. But I stayed true to my blog’s purpose of sharing things I loved, and I genuinely loved these oils.

The Shift from Blogger to Business Builder

Creating a Facebook group changed everything for me. Suddenly, my relationship with my readers became personal. When someone joined Young Living with me, they had a face and a name. I could reach out and talk to them directly. I learned what my community truly cared about: their faith, families, finances, health, purpose in life, and their free time.

I realized I cared about the same things, but many aspects of my life were out of harmony. I thought I had to work 80-100 hours per week and make huge sacrifices in my family life to be successful. Through growing with Young Living, I learned life lessons I never would have discovered elsewhere.

The Power of Vision and Priorities

Many of us live life by default—defaulting to stress and being “busy” instead of focusing on what’s important. We do this because we don’t have a clear vision for what we want from life.

I made a choice to no longer live by default. My vision became rooted in my faith, focused on having a close relationship with my husband and daughter, and building genuine community. With this vision, my priorities shifted into balance: faith first, husband second, daughter third, then work.

I took a leap of faith and cut my hours from 80-100 hours per week to just 20 hours per week, leaving the rest up to God. What happened? I grew even faster, and my relationships flourished. When you focus on growing yourself personally, you can help even more people.

The Three Pillars That Built My Business

Looking back on my journey from starter kit to Royal Crown Diamond, three core principles made all the difference:

Content: Authentic Sharing Over Perfect Marketing

I never had fancy websites, original graphics, professional photos, or expensive printed materials. Most successful people in this business don’t. What I had was authenticity and consistency. I shared my real experiences with oils, the genuine changes in our health, and the honest journey of building a business while raising a family.

My blog became the foundation, but it was the personal connections through Facebook groups and genuine relationships that created lasting growth. People connected with my story because it was real, not polished.

Connection: Building Genuine Relationships

The secret to my rapid growth wasn’t personally enrolling thousands of people—it was massive duplication. I focused on teaching others how to use oils, share oils, and teach others about the business. Then they taught their friends to do the same.

This isn’t just a business strategy; it’s about genuinely serving others. The highest level of helping someone is offering them an opportunity to create their own success. When we help others achieve abundance, we serve something greater than ourselves.

Consistency: Showing Up with Purpose

Success required consistency in sharing, following up, teaching classes, and finding new enrollers. But consistency became easier when it aligned with my values and vision. I wasn’t just building a business—I was sharing something that had transformed my family’s health and could do the same for others.

The key was keeping everything simple enough that anyone could duplicate it. If new team members saw me doing complicated, expensive things, they’d think they needed to do the same to succeed. Instead, I showed them that all they needed was their starter kit and our community support.

The Financial Reality: From $0 to Six Figures

In October 2013, I made the choice to seriously share Young Living essential oils. Two years later, I achieved Royal Crown Diamond rank, which averages $141,000 per month according to Young Living’s income disclosure statement. That’s going from $0 to over $1.6 million annually.

But does success always mean a lot of money? After experiencing significant financial abundance, I learned two important truths:

  • Having a lot of money doesn’t automatically mean wealth or joy
  • Money ultimately isn’t ours—it’s a blessing meant to be used as a blessing to others

The Deeper Purpose: Being Blessed to Be a Blessing

Some argue that network marketing only benefits those at the top, but true leadership in any business means giving back and helping others grow. Growth isn’t about how much we can be blessed with money or success—it’s about how we can be a blessing to others.

My faith teaches that our first responsibility is to help those closest to us, and the highest form of giving is offering someone a job or opportunity to start their own business. Sharing the Young Living opportunity is something I don’t take lightly—it’s my responsibility to help others see the potential right in front of them.

Practical Steps for Your Journey

If you’re feeling called to build something meaningful from home, here’s how to begin based on what actually worked for me:

Start with your own transformation. Use the products consistently and document your real experiences. Your genuine story will become your most powerful sharing tool.

Focus on relationships over transactions. When someone joins your team, add them to educational groups and community spaces. Most members are curious about the business opportunity, so plant seeds naturally without being pushy.

Keep it simple for duplication. Anyone should be able to look at what you’re doing and think, “I can do that!” Avoid complicated systems or expensive tools that create barriers for others.

Be consistent in your chosen methods. Whether you share through classes, social media, or one-on-one conversations, consistency in your approach creates duplication in your team.

Remember your why. Connect with your deeper purpose beyond just earning money. For me, it was creating time freedom to prioritize my faith and family while helping others achieve wellness and abundance.

The Reality of Building from Home

This business can provide the resources to address your priorities and needs in life, but how quickly you grow depends on your desire to serve others. It’s not about overnight success—it’s about consistent, authentic sharing that creates lasting relationships and genuine transformation.

Working from home doesn’t mean working all the time. In fact, cutting my hours dramatically while focusing on what truly mattered accelerated my growth. The freedom to structure your schedule around your family’s needs while building something meaningful is one of the greatest gifts of this business model.

Your Next Step

The Young Living opportunity can provide freedom—time freedom, financial freedom, and the freedom to build something aligned with your values. Whether you’re looking to pay for monthly oils, replace part-time income, or build significant wealth, the potential exists for anyone willing to serve others and stay consistent.

Your journey doesn’t require a large social media following or perfect circumstances. Every other Royal Crown Diamond achieved this rank without starting where I did. What it requires is willingness to grow personally, serve others genuinely, and trust that consistent action aligned with strong values creates extraordinary results.

The question isn’t whether you’re qualified or ready. The question is: are you willing to be blessed so you can be a blessing to others?
