Holistic Health Share Coverage: Emergency Protection + Acupuncture, Chiropractic & More

Ten years ago, we were paying $1,800/month for our family’s PPO — $21,600 a year — with a $10,000 deductible. And we barely used it, because we’re just not “run to the doctor for every cough and sniffle” kind of family — we’re the DIY, chiropractor, naturopath, functional medicine kind of family. So we were paying a huge premium for coverage we frankly didn’t use, and also paying cash out of pocket for the care we actually wanted.

This didn’t make sense to me.

The Moment Everything Changed

The real wake-up call came when I had an emergency c-section with our son, and found out the hospital (which after 40 hours of labor I didn’t really choose!) told us it would cost $30,000 if we filed our insurance claim, because the hospital was out of network. So I asked how much it would be out of pocket — cash pay — and they said “$2,000.” That’s when we switched to a health share.

Since then, using a health share has been a total game changer for our family, but not all of them are the same — so if you’ve read this far, keep reading!

Coverage for Both the Emergencies AND the Everyday

The one we’re on has a holistic health plan built in. In fact, it doesn’t make you choose between “protect us if something goes wrong” and “support the care we actually use every day” — it does both.

If something goes wrong

Emergency & accident protection

Built for exactly the kind of situation we went through.

  • Emergency & urgent care
  • Childbirth & delivery, incl. birth centers & home births
  • Hospital care & labs, no network restrictions
  • No pre-existing exclusions, no annual max
To stay well every day

Holistic & everyday care

The care we already believed in — finally built in.

  • 35 visits/year, up to $175 per visit
  • Acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathy & more
  • $0 telemedicine & virtual mental health, 24/7
  • Up to $50–75/mo back on Young Living products

What’s Actually Covered

So each family member gets 35 holistic visits a year, up to $175 per visit covered. That’s over $24,000 in holistic care available to our family every year — acupuncture, chiropractic, naturopathy, functional medicine, functional nutrition, MDs/DOs, PT, pelvic floor therapy, massage, IV drips, even certain at-home injections like glutathione and NAD+. And more.

Virtual Mental Health

The process is simple: I use an app, generate a virtual prepaid Visa card, and pay my provider directly. No network. No hoop-jumping, and no waiting around on reimbursements. I recently had a full manual lymphatic drainage massage — for FREE!

The Extras I Didn’t Expect to Love So Much

I also love that we get $75/month toward Young Living products (it’s $50/month on an individual-only plan) — another $900/year for things we already buy and use. Plus, there’s $0 telemedicine that’s bailed us out more than once, and there’s still a medical side for emergencies and hospital care and labs, etc.

The Honest Math

Here’s the part I want to be really clear about, because I never want to oversell this: this plan has its own monthly premium. So it’s not free. But side by side with what we were paying before, the difference still holds up.

Our old PPO was $1,800/month — $21,600/year — for medical coverage only, with none of the holistic care included. Meanwhile, the most comparable plan today — the combined Holistic + ClearShare plan for a family, covering both emergency/medical care and the full holistic benefit — runs $712–$980/month depending on the age of the oldest adult on the plan (using the $5,000 annual max tier):

Oldest adult’s ageOld PPOThis plan (family)Monthly difference
18–29$1,800/mo$712/mo−$1,088/mo
30–39$1,800/mo$838/mo−$962/mo
40–49$1,800/mo$875/mo−$925/mo
50–64$1,800/mo$980/mo−$820/mo

Rates depend on age, household size, and annual-max tier chosen — this is one representative example, not a quote.

+

Then, on top of that lower premium, each family member also gets up to $6,125/year in covered holistic visits — care that used to come entirely out of pocket, and is now built into what we’re already paying.

So the honest math is: a lower premium than our old PPO, plus thousands of dollars a year in holistic care that used to come entirely out of pocket. That combination is what changed things for us.

Ultimately, I don’t want SICKcare that only shows up after something’s wrong — instead, I want something that supports what I’m already doing to stay well. And I know I’m not the only one who’s looked at a $200 naturopath bill or a $150 acupuncture visit and thought “I’ll skip it this time.” That’s exactly why I’m such a fan of the holistic plan — it’s not just the savings, it’s finally having healthcare that matches how I actually take care of myself.

And you don’t have to be self-employed to get it, either. You can even add the holistic plan to your existing insurance plan.

“We’re just not ‘run to the doctor for every cough and sniffle’ kind of family — we’re the DIY, chiropractor, naturopath, functional medicine kind of family. This didn’t make sense to me. Now I don’t have to choose.” — Lindsey, Homemade Mommy
