Today, I bring you a tonic made especially for your precious scalp. Whether from the change of the season to colder, drier weather or the detox effect from going no-poo, the irritated skin on your head needs some tender loving, too, and I have just the ingredient to help you.
Many of us think of fennel purely as a culinary herb. But this tiny little seed is a powerful soother that can really help the skin when it gets irritated. Fennel restores the skin’s balance – whether it’s red and irritated or producing too much oil.
The other two powerful ingredients in this tonic are raw apple cider vinegar and vegetable glycerin. ACV brings pH balance to the fragile, outermost layer of the scalp, while the vegetable glycerin lightly moisturizes.
Soothing Fennel Rinse for Dry, Itchy Scalp
Ingredients
- 1 Tbsp fennel seeds
- 1 cup filtered water, boiled
- 1/4 cup raw apple cider vinegar
- 2 tbsp vegetable glycerin
Directions
Put the water in a small pot over high heat.
While you are waiting for the water to boil, crush the fennel seeds with a mortar and pestle (or the back of a spoon). Place the crushed fennel seeds in a small bowl and pour the hot water over them. Let steep for at least 30 mins.
Once steeped, add in the apple cider vinegar and vegetable glycerin and mix well.
Filter your tonic through a sieve or piece of cheesecloth and pour into a glass jar.
Store in a cool, dark cupboard for up to 2 months.
To use, pour over your dry or wet hair and let sit for at least 5 minutes. Gently massage into scalp using a circular motion with the pads of your fingers, then rinse out.

When you say “store for 2 months”, is this prior to using the product or that it only last for 2 months? Thank you!
It will last up to 2 months!
I love making stuff myself for around the farm.
Do you use the full amount per treatment?
Yes you sure do!
Would caraway or anise seeds work? I know they are not the same as fennel seeds, but they are related and I have them in my spices already but I don’t have fennel.
I’ll have to try thus! My scalp is always so dry, blargh
I have really thick hair which makes it hard to get anything close to my scalp, so I use an old plastic icing bottle (like the kind cookie decorators use) to get solutions like this close to my head. Just a tip for any other thick haired folks like myself!
Could you use a aloe instead of vegetable glycerin? I don’t have veg glycerin but have aloe right now.
