Kids are using mobile devices (laptops, smartphones and tablets) now more than ever before and the trend is only increasing. Wait…this is a real food recipe blog, why are we talking about mobile devices? Because I am a mother and someone who has worked in the mobile technology space and I want to explain that just like I strive to put only healthy, real food into my family’s body, I also am very serious about keeping our bodies protected from the potential toxins that surround us. Quite simply, that includes EMF and radiation exposure from my mobile electronics devices.
And no, this isn’t a post about how to detox from or avoid mobile devices – in today’s world that is virtually impossible. But I am going to share one small change you can make to protect your kids from mobile device radiation and it is quite simple!
First, some background so you can understand why this is important.
Mobile devices are everywhere
The fact of the matter is that mobile devices are a part of our everyday lives and many of us are never without our mobile device at all – ever. Two years ago, only 8 percent of families who had kids age 8 or younger had a tablet. Now, 40% do. According to a study by Common Sense Media, 72% of kids under 8 years old have used a mobile device, up from 38% two years ago and 38% of kids as young as under 2 years old use mobile devices.
What does this explosion of mobile device usage mean for our kids?
Parenting choices concerning screen time aside, it is important to realize mobile device usage for our kids is now their way of life. All electronics devices emit EMFs and radiation. What we do know is that kids absorb much more radiation than adults making them more susceptible to the harmful effects of EMF exposure and radiation. (source)
One Small Change to Protect Your Kids from Mobile Device Radiation
Do not ever let the mobile device touch your kid’s body.
Many mobile devices come with manufacturers’ fine print warnings not to hold them next to an adult body. All safety warnings for mobile phones (e.g., “keep 0.98 inches from the body”) were never designed with kids in mind. They were developed over 30 years ago in order to protect a large adult male who talks on his phone for less than 30 minutes per day. Tablets contain 4 or more microwave radiating antennas that are never to be held directly on the body. Your kid’s head absorbs twice as much microwave radiation from mobile phones as an adult’s heads. The same goes for a tablet or mobile device set on their lap. What can this radiation do to a child? Radiation and EMF exposure can lead to fatigue, dizziness, sleep disturbance, DNA damage, impaired nervous system activity, low sperm count and infertility (remember, where does a laptop or tablet sit when on the lap?!), impaired motor skills in children, memory loss, and cancer. (source)
So how do you let your kid use a mobile device while knowing they are protected? It’s really simple. Don’t let the device touch their body by getting a DefenderShield electronic device shield. I use this for my own laptop and when my daughter is playing a game or watching a show, she puts her device on the DefenderShield and I know she isn’t exposed at all to harmful radiation. That’s it. Easy.
The DefenderShield is made of state-of-the-art technology that blocks, diverts and absorbs dangerous Electromagnetic Fields (EMFs) of Extremely Low Frequency (ELF) Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR), Radio Frequency (RF) Electromagnetic Radiation (EMR) and Heat Radiation.
I can take comfort that with this one very small change, I am protecting my daughter from potential risks of too much exposure to mobile devices.

I only see one size for a laptop, do they have smaller sizes for a tablet or iphone?
Lindsey Gremont says
Not yet but they will soon – I believe in January. I am eagerly waiting. I have two laptop sized at home now and I use them for my daughter when she is using the Kindle or iPad or even my iPhone. I try to put them on airplane mode when I can as well….but sometimes you can’t if they are streaming a video or game.
Noelle says
great, thanks! does it release less radiation by having it on airplane mode?
Lindsey Gremont says
In airplane mode you are good!
Noor says
I usually put my iPhone on airplane mode but I do turn on the WiFi while it’s in that mode. I wonder if that makes a difference?
Lindsey Gremont says
WiFi is very much an issue – not just the cell phone signal.

So do these devices only emit radiation from the back? That doesn’t seem quite right to me. If there are still emissions from the screen side, then this pad won’t protect their head area at all, just their lap area…
Lindsey Gremont says
The majority of the radiation is emitted from the bottom of a laptop.

I use a harapad with my laptop at all times. But I have a mac book air with the magic trackpad (and also an ipod touch). And the trackpad and touch screen drive my fingers crazy! They are constantly buzzing- even long after use. I can’t find anything that actually works to protect my fingers. As nice as the harapad is, the fact remains that as long as there is FINGER/ HAND contact to these strong EMF emitting devices, we are not protected. We must find ways to limit exposure, plain and simple. I do not have kids, but I’m pretty sure I wouldn’t want them playing with ipods, tablets, and computers all the time, simply due to the contact. Call me crazy. 😉
Anyone else ever experience the buzzy fingers, as I call them???
Lindsey Gremont says
This is the only laptop shield that blocks EMF – maybe that is why you are having an issue.

I just don’t give these electronics to my daughter and put password to all. She usually make creative things at home. When she is bored I tell her to go out and play with her friends like we did when we were kid:) I shut down all wifi and 3g when I go sleep. I have no idea if it works but we also have salt lamp. Feels good though:)

What is it made of? I do not want to trade one bad thing for another. i looked at their website and didn’t see much about the materials. I am most definitely hesitant as most things that I know of that “shield” radiation have their own issues regarding human health. If intended for children especially i would want to be absolutely certain that there are no component materials and coloring that a child could not safely breath, absorb or eat.
DefenderPad says
Hi Lisa,
We were notified of your question, so we just thought that we would answer you directly. The DefenderPad is free of PVC, BPA, BPS and other known environmental hazards and contains no dangerous compounds or contaminants (like lead). It is completely safe, with nothing to breath in, absorb or eat. If you have any more questions, please feel free to email us directly or give us a call.

The video doesn’t explain how the pad actually works. How is it legit and effective?
Lindsey Gremont says
Did you click to go to their website?
DefenderPad says
Hi Melissa,
To see that is actually works you can take a look at The DefenderPad Shielding Effectiveness Report that was conducted by a FCC certified lab. You can find it on our web site here:

So, could they not just make phone & tablet CASES out of that stuff to be more safe? Also, the picture you have shows the kid holding the tablet….how is that not touching his body? Or do you not count extremities?
Lindsey Gremont says
They are currently working on an iPad and iPhone shield.
Jessica says
So holding and or/touching the screen isn’t exposing them (us) to EMF and/or radiation? Just trying to clarify…
Thanks!
Samer says
Practically, it’s very difficult to implement it in our kids life.
